The Launch of the IRC Enabler Working Group on Gender and
Youth marks a transformative moment for inclusive research and innovation
in African food systems. As part of the International Research Consortium (IRC)
on Food, Nutrition Security, and Sustainable Agriculture (FNSSA), this working
group, created under the Horizon Europe CEA-FIRST initiative, will
institutionalize gender and youth perspectives across research, education,
advisory services, policy, industry, and funding.
During the launch, leading voices including Dr. Irene
Annor-Frempong (AU-EU IRC), Dr. Mariame Maiga (CORAF), Dr. Karen Munoko, Dr.
Mavis Akuffobea-Essifie, and Kofi Kisiedu Acquaye (YPARD Africa) shared
reflections on the critical role of women and young professionals in
agricultural innovation. Genna Tesdall, Global Director of YPARD, moderated the
session.
The meeting is set to deliver a shared roadmap for
integrating youth and gender inclusion in FNSSA engagements. Key outcomes will
include mentorship frameworks, gender-responsive research plans, and policies
aligned with AU Agenda 2063, SDGs 2, 5, and 8, and the Kampala CAADP
Declaration (2025–2035).
By institutionalizing this mechanism, the IRC and its
partners reaffirm their commitment to building a food system that is equitable,
innovative, and resilient, powered by
the creativity and leadership of Africa’s women and youth.
