What if you could grow healthy, high-yielding crops without buying a single bag of synthetic fertiliser or pesticide?
It is not only possible, but it is already happening in fields across Malawi, Zambia, and beyond.
Farmers are combining two powerful, low-cost innovations:
- Fermented Liquid Bio-Fertiliser (FLBF) – to feed the soil and boost plant health
- Botanical Sprays – to repel pests naturally
Together, they form a complete, chemical-free crop protection system rooted in local knowledge, ecological science and farmer ingenuity.
Why Go All-In on Chemical-Free Farming?
For decades, smallholder farmers have been told that high yields require synthetic inputs. However, the reality tells a different story:
- Chemical fertilisers degrade soil over time, killing beneficial microbes.
- Synthetic pesticides harm bees, birds and human health and pests like fall armyworm keep evolving resistance.
- Both are expensive, often fake and create dependency.
The reality in farming is that healthy plants in healthy soil rarely get sick. When pests do come, natural sprays are ready.
Step 1: Feed the Soil with Fermented Liquid Bio-Fertiliser (FLBF)
Developed by Kasisi Agricultural Training Centre (KATC) in Zambia, FLBF is a nutrient-rich, microbe-packed liquid made from:
- Fresh cow dung
- Wood ash
- Molasses or brown sugar
- Milk or whey
- Yeast
- Clean water
After 3-4 weeks of sealed fermentation, it’s diluted (1:20) and applied as a top dressing every 2-3 weeks.
Benefits:
- Boosts root growth and leaf vigour
- Improves soil structure and water retention
- Builds natural plant resistance to disease
Strong, well-nourished plants are less attractive to pests and recover faster if attacked.
Step 2: Protect Crops with Botanical Sprays
Farmers in Mzimba, Malawi, have perfected the use of locally available plants to fight pests, validated through field trials by Soils, Food and Healthy Communities (SFHC).
Two key plants:
- Mtetezga (Tephrosia vogelii) – highly effective against aphids, bean flies and weevils
- Chisoyo (Vernonia amygdalina) – powerful against fall armyworm, stalk borers and caterpillars
How to make the spray (6 simple steps):
- Collect fresh leaves
- Dry in shade
- Pound into powder
- Mix 1 kg powder + 5L water + 1 tbsp soap
- Soak overnight
- Strain and spray in the late afternoon

- Non-toxic to humans and pollinators
- Biodegradable and affordable
- Uses plants that grow wild across Southern Africa
Unlike synthetic pesticides, botanicals spare beneficial insects like ladybugs and bees.
The Power of Pairing: A Complete Organic System
When used together, FLBF and botanical sprays create a virtuous cycle:

Real Impact
In Malawi, SFHC farmers using botanicals saw significant reductions in fall armyworm damage without poisoning their fields.
In Zambia, KATC trainees using FLBF reported greener maize, stronger roots and better drought tolerance.
