From Earth to Earth
“In a world increasingly focused on sustainability and ecological responsibility, the phrase ‘From Earth and Back to Earth’ serves as a powerful metaphor for how we should live in harmony with nature. It highlights our deep connection to the land and our duty to protect it. Organic agriculture perfectly embodies this concept. This farming approach is rooted in environmental respect, aiming to minimize negative impacts on ecosystems while fostering a balanced relationship between humans and nature. Through practices like soil fertility preservation, natural pest control, sustainable resource management, and respect for natural cycles, organic agriculture aligns human activities with the earth’s natural rhythms” says Faouzia Smiti.
Faouzia Smiti, a young entrepreneur from Gabès, Tunisia, is a shining example of this philosophy in action.
As the founder of El Mandara, Faouzia is deeply committed to promoting organic agriculture and agroecology in her community. Her organization provides training and consultancy services to farmers, helping them develop sustainable rural businesses and secure funding for their projects through public agencies.
Faouzia’s work extends beyond advisory services; she is also focused on establishing a network of model farms to demonstrate best practices in agroecology. Additionally, she explores income-generating ideas in agriculture and aquaculture, always with a focus on environmental sustainability. One of her key passions is educating her community on soil improvement and irrigation techniques, all while protecting the unique ecology of the local oasis in collaboration with local NGOs.
In her role as Tunisia’s ambassador for Access Agriculture, a nonprofit organization that supports organic farming and agroecology, Faouzia facilitates access to high-quality training videos in local languages. This initiative helps spread valuable agricultural knowledge both locally and internationally, empowering farmers with the tools they need to embrace sustainable practices.
