Seeds of Success: How Ms. Mainara Revolutionized Farming from Tanzania to Kilimanjaro

Date

In a story of dedication and transformative impact, Ms. Mainara Gideon Kalinga, a visionary from Mbozi in the Songwe Region of Tanzania, embarked on a life-changing journey in 2021. Traveling over 1,200 kilometers to SJS Organic Farm – the KCOA-KHEA Center for Excellence in Mwanga, Kilimanjaro, she joined a group of 30 participants in the Kibowavi program by Helvetas Tanzania. Little did she realize that this one-week training would mark a pivotal moment in her life. SJS Organic Farm is a Centre of Excellence on the KCOA – Project closely working under TOAM (Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement) a Country Implementing Partner under KHEA on the KCOA Project.

A Remarkable Leap: From Training to Triumph

Ms. Mainara’s journey to success is a testament to the power of knowledge and determination. After completing her training at SJS Organic Farm, she launched the “Shambani Agriservices Foundation” in Ihanda ward, Iboya village, Mbozi District. Her Agrovet business, officially registered with BRELA on November 16, 2021, showcases a remarkable success story. Although we couldn’t meet Mainara in person during our visit due to her participation in the Saba Saba national industrial expo in Dar es Salaam, we were able to witness the impressive results of her hard work.

Thriving Business Ventures

Mainara’s Agrovet company has flourished, driven by the effective training she received at SJS Organic Farm. With support from the Kibowavi Project, as well as the KCOA-KHEA Project she has established two shop premises: one dedicated to selling well-packaged organic products and the other equipped with grinding machines for producing Soil Nutrient Farm Inputs and Organic Pest Management items. Her product range includes Neem seeds, compost, chili concoctions for pest management, and a unique soil nutrition mix she developed based on her training.

The success of her business is reflected in customer feedback and her innovative approach. The catchy tagline “Farm with Mainara” on her products not only builds trust but also underscores her commitment to high-quality organic farming.

Impressive Innovations and Results

During our visit, we were introduced to Mainara’s thriving farm, greeted warmly by her family. Among the standout features was her tomato seedlings in a greenhouse, boasting an impressive 99% germination rate. This success is attributed to her innovative “Super Udongo” soil technique, a product of her SJS training, which she is set to launch in August 2023 with orders from 27 customers already lined up.

Ripple Effect as a Local Service Provider

Mainara’s impact extends beyond her own farm. As a Local Service Provider (LSP) through the KIBOWAVI and KCOA Project, she has trained 15 local farmer groups, reaching approximately 300 families. Her influence has led to the adoption of organic practices by her mother, a conventional coffee farmer, and the wider community. This ripple effect demonstrates her role in advancing organic agriculture and rural technology.

Embracing Sustainable Practices

Although Mainara was in Dar es Salaam during our visit, we connected via video call. She shared her experiences transitioning from conventional to organic farming, highlighting benefits such as improved crop yields, better taste, and more sustainable practices. Her success story exemplifies how organic farming can revitalize rural communities and promote a healthier, more eco-friendly approach to agriculture.

Encouragement and Future Prospects

Fr Alwyn commended Mainara’s achievements and encouraged her to pursue further training in intermediate and advanced organic practices. This will allow her to access over 20 new Integrated Soil Nutrient Management Systems (ISNMS) and Integrated Pest Management Systems (IPMS), further enhancing her agricultural practices and market offerings.

A Call to Transform Lives

Ms. Mainara’s journey from Mbozi to SJS Organic Farm illustrates the transformative power of knowledge and innovation. Her dedication to sustainable agriculture has not only benefited her own farm but also inspired her community to embrace organic farming. Her story is a beacon of hope and a call to action for others to pursue similar paths, working together to create a greener, more sustainable world.

Through SJS Organic Farm training and the support of the Kibowavi Project, lives are being transformed. Ms. Mainara’s continued efforts will undoubtedly yield a legacy of inspiration for future generations, showcasing the potential of rural innovators to drive positive change.
