In the pursuit of sustainable agriculture, smallholder farmers often face significant challenges in accessing markets for their agroecological products. The PESA Model Guide was developed by Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) in Uganda and East and Southern Africa Small Scale Farmers Forum (ESAFF) in Eastern Africa, with support from the Ford Foundation (Eastern Africa-Regional Office) in 2001. The guide offers a transformative approach to overcoming these barriers.
What Is the PESA Model?

Â
The PESA Agro-Enterprise Marketing Model Training Guide is a farmer-centric approach designed to enhance market access for small and medium-sized producers. By placing farmers at the forefront of decision-making processes, PESA fosters trust, collaboration, and collective action among all stakeholders in the agricultural value chain. This model emphasizes transparency, accountability, and mutual benefit, ensuring that farmers receive fair returns for their agroecological products.
Â
Key Components of the PESA Model
Â
-
- Farmer Empowerment: Farmers are actively involved in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of market strategies, ensuring that their needs and perspectives drive the process.
-
- Collective Action: Through group formation and collaboration, farmers can achieve economies of scale, improving their bargaining power and reducing individual risks.
-
- Market Linkages: PESA facilitates connections between farmers and various market actors, including buyers, processors, and retailers, expanding market opportunities for agroecological products.
-
- Capacity Building: Training and support are provided to enhance farmers’ skills in production, quality control, and business management, enabling them to meet market demands effectively.
-
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Continuous assessment ensures that the model’s implementation remains aligned with farmers’ goals and market requirements, allowing for adaptive management and sustained success.
Impact and Success Stories
Â
Implementing the PESA model has yielded positive outcomes for farmers in various regions. For instance, in Uganda, PELUM Uganda utilized the PESA model to enhance agroecological market access for small-scale farmers. By focusing on collective action and farmer empowerment, the model addressed challenges related to production, productivity, and marketing, leading to improved market access and better returns for farmers.
